"SANDIA MORNING"

"SANDIA MORNING"
8"X10"
acrylic on panel
This is from my early morning painting excursion a week or so ago. The mountains had a nice hazy look to them and I don't know where the pink/orange came from, but I guess I must have felt it, because there it is!
I am preparing for Taos, it's really exciting to be going to that beautiful, spiritual place and having the opportunity to paint with other painters. I hope to keep a video diary to share with you. Enjoy!

"SANDIA HILLSIDE"

"SANDIA HILLSIDE"
5"X7"
Acrylic on board
I finished this one. I didn't do a lot to it because I love the freshness of the colors.
I just glazed it a little darker near the forground and added a couple of coats of nice varnish.
I painted this one sitting on the tailgate of my car. I will post some photos of the area later, so you can see where my inspiration came from.

"MOUNTAIN FLOWERS"

"MOUNTAIN FLOWERS"

10"X10"

SOLD

Well finally...about time I get a daily painting done!

I love all the background greens with the orange peeking through. And the tight-knit little mound of mountain wildflowers. I see poppies, sunflowers, asters, maybe some Queen Anne's lace too. This was a vision out of my head, no photographs tonight!

This is a larger canvas than I usually offer for sale but I have about six of these and I won't be using them for the summer show. I hope to have that big sunflower piece done tomorrow and I'm also starting a large piece for an event called Legacy Art. This is the most fun art event - sponsored by Amado Pena. They have a big party for the artists; Lou Diamond Phillips is there acting as auctioneer, and it's just a totally fun time. Any ideas on what I should paint? The canvas will probably be 36"x36" or 40"x40." Have a good night!

work in progress

I seem to be in the "creating" phase and not the "finishing" phase yet!
This is another work in progress that I hope to finish up by tonight. I like the loose feel of this one. Hope your day is happy...

THE LILAC HOUSE

THE LILAC HOUSE
5"x7"
I pass by this funky little adobe house almost every day. It fronts an extremely busy street, so there was no time to stop and set up my easel. I just snapped the shot driving down the street (dangerous), went down to the open space about four blocks away, parked, set up my paints in the front seat of my car and went to work. I set the camera on the dashboard and sketched in the image. I'm working with gessoboard instead of canvas and I like them. The camera kept turning off my itself after a certain amount of time, which was frustrating! So now I have a good underpainting and I hope to finish this one tonight. The lilacs are incredible in person, by the way. And I decided I like painting in the front seat of my car - it kind of brings everything up close and personal. The only bad thing is the paint on the steering wheel. Good things it's acrylic!

Plein Air Painting

Near La Luz Trail
Sandia Backroads
Well, I had a fun morning. Got to the trailhead about 8:45am. I ended up not painting there. I headed back north and snuck up to La Luz and La Cueva trails. I stopped a couple of places and took lots of pics for future paintings. It's interesting - I ended up doing a couple of paintings
in the front seat of my car! The canvases are so small and I just put everything on the passenger seat next to me, parked in the shade as much as possible, and painted away. Acrylics dry so fast (most plein air is done in oil) that being in the car is a blessing. Plus it was very windy, so I just rolled the windows down and felt like I had the best of both worlds - being outside but semi-comfortable. I will work on these paintings some more in the studio and then post them on
the blog for sale. Enjoy your day!

PLACITAS MISSION CHURCH

Hello everyone! I've felt a little lazy because I haven't posted a daily painting in a few days and then I realized I am getting a lot of other things accomplished. I am cleaning and organizing my studio (am almost done). I have finished a small painting for a collector. I have painted two small pieces as a donation to a local elementary school for their fundraiser to help pay for an art teacher next year. I am designing a t-shirt for my Curves because we raised 9,175 lbs. of food in our annual food drive. Yea! I have worked on my yard. I have done a small makeover on my front porch. I have been working out. I have gotten my taxes done. I have painted outdoors at Old Town. In fact, I am painting again this Saturday - they're having some big parade and fiesta - come on down! I am also painting a large piece for the Art Has Heart Foundation's annual fundraiser that's coming up in May. I am gearing up to go to Taos for a 5 day paint-out with the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (www.pleinairpaintersnm.org) and the Plein Air Painters of Colorado.
I have bought canvas and am organizing for my summer show. I guess I am draging my feet because I know once I actually start working on everything, I will not stop until the middle of July. Yep, I am definitely a procrastinator. But I am going to aim for a daily painting tonight! Have a wonderful day.

My Painting Day

After two hours of painting
Trying to get the canvas covered!
Blocking in the basic shapes
THE BEGINNING: A WHITE CANVAS!
What a nice day!! I had no set plan -
I just decided to paint some wild flowers with mountains in the background.
It was a beautiful day down at Old Town.
They had wonderful Mayan music outside where I was painting.
I met a 13 year-old boy on vacation from Kentucky
who said he has been so inspired by the art in New Mexico.
He thinks he has no talent but wants to do something creative.
I told him to start taking art classes now so he can have a basic knowledge
of drawing, painting, pottery, batik, printing, photography, etc.,
then he can make up his mind about what he'd like to do.
We're going to keep in touch.
I will finish this painting at home this week and take it back when
I paint there next Saturday.

FUTURE WORK

This old adobe with such a beautiful door is at the village of Cerrillos, New Mexico. I am gathering ideas of what I'd like to paint for my summer show and I love this photo. I haven't figured out what's on top of the house, bottles, colorful glass bottles, maybe? That's my car you see in the reflection. Obviously, I will leave that out of the painting and maybe add some hollyhocks and colorful flowers. I should have a new painting tomorrow night.

Finally, another daily painting! You don't know how much I've missed painting these small little gems. This is a smaller study of my show piece "Backlit Sandias." I have a lot of small paintings in my head right now so you will be seeing lots of them.
I have just gone over my schedule through July, and boy, do I have a lot of things going on. The main excitement for me is with the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico. They are having a big paint out in Taos for 4-5 days in May. I am SO there!

New Daily Painting

This is a work in progress, size 8"x8" that will be up for purchase tomorrow night.
I didn't plan to do any painting today, but I went and heard a sermon
about happiness, and went to see some beautiful puppies and I guess I got inspired!
I'm not finishing this tonight because I am going to eat with my family at Gardunos, the best Mexican food in town. My show opening was wonderful, the fundraiser at Casa Esperanza was fantastic - my hope chest sold for $1050 and life is good right now.
Tomorrow starts the planning stage for my show at the end of June.

THE SHOW

"Backlit Sandias"Several of my paintings
Some new friends
I had such fun last night!
We had great food, a lovely strolling guitarist singing Spanish songs,
a painting giveaway, and I sold four paintings.
I was going to do a painting demonstration but ended up
just enjoying myself talking to people so I left my easel and materials there
and will go back a few times over the next three weeks to paint outside.
Tonight I am going to the annual fundraising event at Casa Esperanza.
There will be fun, food, and a live auction of hand-painted hope chests. Click on the link above to see all of the hope chests. Until tomorrow!

almost ready

"SANDIA SUNSET"
16"X20"
This painting is actually finished, but this is the first time I've posted it. The version you are seeing is without lines. It had a nice, soft feel. I'm always torn between leaving the pieces untouched and itching to put the lines in. I like them both ways...
If you want to see the completed painting,
come on down to the opening of the show this Friday night, Weems Old Town, 5:30pm.
If you are interested in this particular painting, please email me for purchase information.

"CORRALES STORM"

I realize that this image is a little blurry, but I wanted you to see what I've been working on. I'm almost ready for the show. Am busy putting hooks, wire, titling, and making an inventory list. Most of the paintings will go to the photographer's today for shooting, and I have several pieces in the works I want to finish. So today will be a very busy day!
I should have 26 paintings for the show.
