in the studio...

IN THE STUDIO.....

"OVERLOOK"
8X8"
oil

My first studio painting in a while!
This was from an image taken during a paint out up in Questa, NM.

I fell in love with this canyon and the river at the bottom.
This is a place called Sheep's Crossing
(didn't see a sheep crossing anywhere)
in the Wild Rivers Recreation area.

Richard Alan Nichols did a demo at this location
and his work enticed me to buy some new paint colors:
Cobalt Blue and Radiant Violet.
I haven't popped them open yet but will soon.

Gosh, I just love painting landscapes.
There is something so special about our state -
the open skies, the vast mesas, the vegetation,
the water (for which we are so thankful),
the canyons and ridges, the formations,
I could go on.
I never get tired of painting New Mexico!

This painting is part of my 150 CHALLENGE,
which will be finished by my ART GARDEN PARTY
happening Sunday, September 3rd.
I hope!

Jemezland

It was Labor Day so I decided NOT to labor.
We took a drive to Jemez instead.
I hadn't been for quite a while and some of my kids
went camping up there so we went to find them.

It had rained the night before and there were a lot of
beautiful, white, puffy clouds.
I also got a cool picture of ducks flying alongside our car.

 Look at this gorgeousness!
I know some people don't see anything special in this,
but my husband got sick of me saying, "Oh, wow, look at those clouds,"
and rolling the window down every two seconds to take a photo.

 The Jemez mountains

Look at all of the different colors.
This would make a great painting.

 .An old adobe

Man, I just can't get over the vistas.
I could imagine this as a 36x48" painting.

Driving down into Jemez, the rock starts to turn red.

Beautiful. Soon these leaves will be turning gold.

I was trying to get shots of this yellow green little bush.
There were fields of it in certain spots.

 Los Ojos bar in Jemez.
It's been there since I was a teenager.

The side of Los Ojos is pretty!
Some steer horns and sunflowers.

 Mountain asters starting to bloom

 Enjoying the scenery

I think this is mullein and wildflowers

We found the campground pretty easy and got treated to
ribs, baked potatoes, and smores. Yum.

 Penny's first time camping

Mondo and his friend David chopping wood
Mondo is my new son-in-law and he knows a lot about camping.
Actually, he knows a lot about everything.

 Mac and Mondo

 Mondo making smores for us

 The camping group

After eating we said good bye and started our trip home.
The grasses are SO green here.

 Love this old Chevy

Sun just hitting the top of these peaks

 The Jemez River
Check out the red dirt.
The water is muddy because of rain.

 An almost dry arroyo

This is what it looks like when the sun shines on these red hills.
Incredible.

Clouds and sky, red and orange, hills and ridges,
greens and yellows.
Sorry about all of the telephone poles!

Light on a beautiful old house.

Light on the Sandias on our way home.
Coming back in a week or so with my cousin,
so I will see these sights again,
And hopefully more!

Also next week - more plein air painting in Corrales!

#15-4 "NEAR PILAR"

"NEAR PILAR"
8x10"
oil on panel
$99

My mouth is watering as I write - wanting so bad to take a day trip up north.

I know there's probably snow, but I still want to go!

This is a scene from Pilar, New Mexico, which is a tiny little spot you pass
on the way to Taos, New Mexico.

There are a few shops, artsy places, and a river rafting company.
You turn left off the highway, the mountains meet you, and the river runs right by your side.
There are turn-offs to stop and daydream or camp if you'd like.

Across the river, you can also spot sleepy little houses in the village of Pilar.

I never get tired of looking at this little spot and hope you can visit someday too.

and it will take you directly to Paypal.
Saves a step!

"PEACE ON THE JEMEZ"
8X8"
oil on hardboard
Available at Little Luna Gallery
Madrid, NM

When I need a break, a getaway from the hustle and bustle
and I don't have a lot of time to take a long day trip, Jemez is the perfect place to go.

It's only 40 minutes from Albuquerque and some of the scenery is heart-stoppingly
beautiful. Red rocks, red cliff, unique formations. With a river running through it!

There is a pull off right next to the river that we like.
We'll pack a lunch, my cousin and I, and pull up, get out,
set up chairs, and have a picnic right next to the river.

Sometimes I will bring along my plein air gear and set up shop in my chair
and paint without moving. Those are the best times...

Doesn't matter what time of year, it's always beautiful.

"THE VIEW"

"THE VIEW"
10X8"
$250

This is my painting for the new art blog, "LET'S PAINT NEW MEXICO."
We accept a challenge every two weeks to paint a painting or make art from a photo image of a place in New Mexico.

This painting is oil on 3/4" cradled gessobord and painted black around the sides.
The scene is one that you pass on the way to Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch and it always looks different.
I haven't seen it in autumn yet and that's on my bucket list.

It's for the Balloon Fiesta show, but....
