"WINTER GOLD"
8x10"
oil on panel

My  newest entry into the group,
"LET'S PAINT NEW MEXICO!"

A photo image of somewhere in New Mexico is posted
once a week and a group of artists paints their version.
So fun!

To see all of the images so far, click HERE.
There is also a facebook page by the same name.

The image was really hard to work from because
it's winter and there is a lack of color in the landscape.

I had to create my own color
by looking deeper into the photo and thinking about the values.

i also tried to be loose and painterly.
I hope you enjoy!

This is my second attempt at the Challenge 1 painting of Corrales hollyhocks.
A group of artists have started painting in a group called, "LET'S PAINT NEW MEXICO!"

We have a blog (Click HERE to view) and a facebook page of the same name.
I post an New Mexico image once a week -  ideally, every Sunday night - and we all create our version of the image. Really cool!

Now on to a few other things...
I was out the other day looking for winter inspiration and drove up near Balloon Fiesta Park and this was my horizon view:

This is a view of the western horizon with Mount Taylor in the background.
The coolest thing was I didn't even realize that I had gotten the church in the shot
until I edited the photos.
I was trying to crop out the telephone wires above Mount Taylor.
This might be a long horizontal painting soon.

This was near the same location.
Who would have thought that winter colors (or seemingly lack thereof)
could be so beautiful? Lots of gold, yellows, and beautiful maize colors.

This is the one I chose for our Challenge 2 inspiration photo.
It has beautiful colors, leaves in the foreground, dried chamisa flowers,
and a nice horizon line.
I'm anxious to get started on this one.

Another view.
I think this would also make a nice winter painting.

15-5 "THE GARDEN PORTAL" and a new facebook group!

 "THE GARDEN PORTAL"
10x8"
oil on panel
$99

This is the first of my paintings for our new facebook group called,
"LET'S PAINT NEW MEXICO!"

I started this group as a blog a couple of years ago, and wow,
I think we all turned out some exeptional artwork.

I put the blog away for a while because I got so busy,
but I have brought it back as a free facebook group page, so
artists can join up and then they can post their own creations.
Much easier for me.

The object is this:
I post an image of New Mexico every Wednesday, and artists-
professionals to beginner or anywhere in between,
create their version of the image and then post it
to facebook for all to see.

No obligation and no judgement.

NOTE TO SELF:
Try another painting today because
working under lights at night in the studio
hurts your eyes and changes your color perception.
I like this version but the original
flowers in the photo are more red and brilliant than in this painting.

#15-4 "NEAR PILAR"

"NEAR PILAR"
8x10"
oil on panel
$99

My mouth is watering as I write - wanting so bad to take a day trip up north.

I know there's probably snow, but I still want to go!

This is a scene from Pilar, New Mexico, which is a tiny little spot you pass
on the way to Taos, New Mexico.

There are a few shops, artsy places, and a river rafting company.
You turn left off the highway, the mountains meet you, and the river runs right by your side.
There are turn-offs to stop and daydream or camp if you'd like.

Across the river, you can also spot sleepy little houses in the village of Pilar.

I never get tired of looking at this little spot and hope you can visit someday too.

#15-3 "LUNCH DATE"

"LUNCH DATE"
8x10"
oil on panel
$99

This is an interesting story.

Whenever my cousin Goldie and I start out on a northern New Mexico day trip,
we always stop first at the wonderful little Tesuque Market and restaurant in Tesuque, New Mexico, which is just outside of Sante Fe.

They usually have the wood stove on, fresh breakfast burritos and cinnamon rolls.
And their BLTs are fantastic.

We decided to eat lunch there one day and as we were eating,
Goldie says to me, "Don't turn around, but you will never guess who's sitting behind you!"
Goldie is such an autograph/star hound - she loves meeting famous people.

Well, of course, I slowly turned around and it was a famous actress and her friend having lunch.

My husband has always loved this actress so I really wanted to take her photo
and introduce myself but it just didn't seem appropriate.

So, I settled for shooting a photo over my shoulder as we were leaving,
which is SO much more appropriate!

I've wanted to paint this for a long time, but things got in the way.
This is for you Goldie!

#15-2 "BOSQUE FALL"

"BOSQUE FALL"
8x10"
oil on hardboard
$99

This scene is from an autumn trip to the beautiful Bosque del Apache.
This huge wetland area is a wildlife sanctuary for Sandhill cranes, snow geese, and a lot of other wildlife. I've seen deer there on occasion.

My favorite part of the painting was mixing the reds and oranges to create the willow
that is so abundant throughout the preserve.

I am putting it on my bucket list to go there in late summer, when the sunflowers are in full bloom.

#15-1 "WILDFLOWERS AND PURPLE" a new beginning!

"WILDFLOWERS IN PURPLE"
8x8"
oil on hardboard
SOLD

Well, it took me long enough, but here it is - the first painting of 2015.

I spent yesterday getting my studio semi-organized and today when I started squeezing paints out the the tube - oh my gosh. How I have missed the smell of oils. And Gamsol!

Oil painting has such a different vibe than acrylics. So much oomph. So much luminosity.

I decided to start off with a wildflower meadow because that subject is my favorite to paint. There is so much freedom in painting wild, chaotic masses of flowers.

I have so many exciting things I want to do this year. I'm in the process of making a bucket list for 2015 and I know I'm going to go overboard. But hey, if you don't dream big - why dream?
