SHOW - FLOWERS: WOMEN AND CREATIVITY

"VERBS"
14'X11"
SOLD
This is my first entry for the upcoming show at The national Hispanic Cultural Center.
I don't have a title yet, but my working title is "VERBS." The Canyon Woman at the bottom are holding up an earth (actually THE earth, and all around the edge I've listed verbs that describe for me, the things that women do throughout their lives for us all. They include words like; creating, nurturing, listening, dancing, teaching, etc. And the women and earth are surrounded by flowers, most of us women bloom where we're planted, so I think flowers are a cool analogy. If anyone can come up with a more appropriate title, email me....I think this painting would make a really cool poster. For something, I don't know what!

"PASSAGES"
11"X14"
This is my second entry. People seem to have really like my dancers and I don't really know what they have to do with creativity except that they are dancers, and dancers definitely have to be creative. When I think of dancers like this, I also think of flowers. Mexican flowers, flowers in their hair, people throwing flowers when their performances are done, etc. These two paintings were really fun to do, and a nice little break from the daily and the challenge paintings. They are both for sale, please email me for purchase information. I have boxed up challenge paintings 109 through 150, I am running out of room in the studio! I continue on Monday....

"MYSTERY"
8"x8"
I thought this quaint little New Mexico church conjured up some mysterious thoughts; where is this little church? Why is the sky that mysterious color? Who are those crosses meant for? Why does the tree on the right look like a spider's web? What ARE those purple flowers? Or, maybe I'm just tired, ha ha! Purchase information is below:

"ABANDON"

"ABANDON"
8"X10"
SOLD
This painting is deep in a field of wild poppies. They seem to be blowing in the breeze or reaching for the unseen sky. I love painting wild masses of flowers, I think they're my favorite. But, if I paint too many in a row, I start craving something different; churches, big masses of clouds, maybe some subject I've never painted before. Purchase information is below:
Also, check out my two new 150 CHALLENGE paintings!

"ALMOST TIME"

"AMOST TIME" work in progress
8"x10"
SOLD (js)
Every year about the middle of March, I drag out all my hummingbird feeders, clean them and start filling them with a small amount of nectar. The hummingbird scouts will soon be out and about and they will find the feeders . Then, all the others will come in droves. This is the first of several hummingbird paintings. It should be finished tonight.
I have five paintings that are almost finished; two daily and three challenge. We ended up going to eat and to the movies last night - saw Rachel Getting Married, very good. So I didn't get as far along as I'd hoped. I won't be able to get into the studio until late this afternoon sometime, so these paintings won't be posted until be this evening or late Sunday night. Enjoy your weekend, it is supposed to be in the 60's here for the next few days. Bye!

"SANDIA MEADOW"

"SANDIA MEADOW"
8"X8"
Sandia means watermelon is spanish. These beautiful mountains near my house turn this watermelon color every day at approximately the same time. The color doesn't last long and I usually don't even notice, even though I can see them through the trees in my backyard. Well, yesterday, I rushed out to the car and drove up the hill and snapped a few shots. My rendition of our beautiful Sandia Mountains. Purchase information is below:
There will also be a 150 CHALLENGE painting similar to this one tomorrow morning:www.150challenge.blogspot.com

I'll explain it later!

"NEW MEXICO CLOUDS"

"NEW MEXICO CLOUDS"
8"X8"
Most people who have never been to New Mexico can't imagine the sunsets that we enjoy. With so many horizon lines throughout our state, we see things that sometimes don't even look real and paintings can't quite capture. This is a sunset just before the sun goes completely down, just enough to light up the clouds at the top. Enjoy...purchase information is below:
Also, check out my 150 Challenge painting for today, it's another take on this sunset, just a few minutes later in the day. www.150challenge.blogspot.com

"SAN ISIDRO"

"SAN ISIDRO"
8'X8"
SOLD
My finished little church painting. Almost all of the little New Mexico churches have graveyards next to them. Mostly the older ones, I guess. I know in Wilard, when someone buries a family member, the family usually comes with shovels and digs the grave themselves. That, to me, is very cool.

"MY STUDIO DOOR"

"MY STUDIO DOOR"
8"X8"
SOLD
I guess I'm ready for spring. I was looking through photos and came across a photo of the door to my studio. I've never painted it and I just wanted to see myself what it would look like. I like it and tomorrow I'm going to go out and rake the leaves around it and get it ready for warm weather when I can actually open the door to let in the sunshine and fresh air. Purchase information is below.
Also, I have two new 150 CHALLENGE paintings you might want to take a peek at:

"SUNSET SENORITAS"

The Sketch

"SUNSET SENORITAS"
24"X36"
Finally, this one is done.
The painting will be auctioned off at a fundraiser gala for Casa Esperanza, a local temporary home for people receiving cancer treatments at UNM hospital.
This will be my sixth or seventh year of participation, I'velost count. Such a nice organization. I believe they receive no funds other than private donations. Check them out:

Tomorrow I will have two new 150 Challenge paintings to post - stay tuned...

COMMISSION

image development

"IRIS MENAGERIE"
8"X16"
SOLD
A commission requested from one of the 150 Challenge paintings.

GALLERY FLOWERS"

"GALLERY FLOWERS"
10"X8"
SOLD
On a paint out in Santa Fe a couple of years ago, this gallery window on Canyon Road had all of these colorful flowers right outside their window. I can't recall the gallery but it was right in the heart of gallery row. I think it was in the summertime when all of the flowers were at their peak.
Makes me want to go back right now. Especially since it's kind of dreary-looking here today. We have a brand new rail runner system that goes from Albuquerque to Santa Fe and as soon as the weather warms up, that's where I'm headed. You get dropped off at the station in Santa Fe and they have shuttles that will take you right up to Canyon Road.
Purchase information is below.
Oh, and I will be posting two 150 Challenge paintings a little later today and also sketched of a larger dancer painting I'm working on. Enjoy your day!

"NIGHT SUNFLOWERS IN NEW MEXICO"

Rusty hills against a dark blue sky, a sweet flowing stream, turquoise blue hills, and lots of lovely night flowers. Sunflowers, pink coneflowers, and asters. This was fun to paint.
Purchase information is below:

"WILD IRIS"

"WILD IRIS"
8"X10"
SOLD
Iris have to be one of my top five favorite flowers, especially for fragrance. And they are so easy to grow. When my girls were small, we went to an iris farm in Cerillos, NM, and there were just rows and rows of beautiful flowers, all different colors. I'm going to dig up some old photos so I can show you the real thing. I don't even know if it's still there. I'm also doing a challenge painting like this one, the size is 8"x16." You'll see it tomorrow. Purchase information is below.

"ROSE"

"ROSE"
8"x8"
Again, something a little different for me. This is not my usual wild mass of flowers. Just one single, solitary rose. The photo for this painting actually came from I shot I took of my neighbor's back yard. He has beautiful flowers - especially roses and larkspur. Purchase information is below:

"SAN ISIDRO" work in progress

"SAN ISIDRO"
8"X8"
SOLD
This is a work in progress, you can see the lines in the foreground of the little hills and around parts of the church. The church itslef will actually be a little darker and have more shadows. It will be ready tomorrow.

"CALLAS"

"CALLAS"
8"X8"
SOLD
This painting isn't about the lillies as much as it is about the process. It's also about the negative space between the flowers. I'm sure I will paint these flowers many more times and in many different ways. I was looking for some way to let the toned ground underneath show through and it gave it a much more three dimensional look. The rust color acts as a shadow in some places and as a highlight in others. You can also see the rust through the purple background. It looks like the light is coming from underneath. Next time I may try scumbling the background and use several different colors. Purchase information is below.
Also, look for three150 Challenge paintings tomorrow!

"PRAIRIE COWS"

"PRAIRIE COWS"
8"X10"
Okay, I admit it, I've NEVER drawn or painted a cow in my life. This is a first for me. And I like how it turned out. An end-of-the-day stormy sky, the warm colors in the mesa, and those lazy cows! Purchase information is below...Also, I'm working on my 150 Challenge painting, it's a little larger (12"x16") and will be a steal at the $150 show in June.

"NOVIO"
8"X8"
SOLD
I created these two paintings for a group show called "LOVE" being exhibited at the Albuquerque Arts Alliance. I'm supposed to deliver them tomorrow but I think I may save one of them for my 150 Challenge painting. I love the way this one turned out. They look like they might be in love.

"SUNSET DANCE"
8"X8"
SOLD
A sunset dance with a sweet surprise at the end!
Stay tuned for more tomorrow.

Day Trips

Yesterday we went to Willard, New Mexico for our aunt's 86th birthday party. Willard is a small village comprised of about 247 people, most of them related to my husband. There was a mass said in our aunt's honor at the only church (Catholic) in town and then a huge dinner at the local community center. We had great food, they busted a pinata, all the aunts wore little tiaras, it was fun. Willard also has a cantina and a closed gas station. I looked for info on the web but couldn't really find anything so I'm going to do some research. The only thing I really know is that it used to be booming when the train depot was there and our cousin was mayor once and won by winning a hand of poker. And I'm going back in the spring to take more photo. The photo above was an old car on someone's property - riddled with bullet holes, I'm thinking!
This photo is of the small adobe house that my husband grew up in. It's directly across from the church and it has changed hands within the family for the amount of $300. I tried to buy it back yesterday but the owner wasn't interested. This will definitely be a future painting.

This was a photo I took at Bosque del Apache (one of 262). I had never been there and it's so beautiful. Peaceful and quiet, except for when the birds come in to roost and then the noise is deafening. I'm going back mid-spring when everything is green and lush. There are miles of trails that you can walk, jog, or ride your bike. No picnic areas or camping, etc.
