I will be posting a few more later.

sunflowers...work in progress

sunflowers...work in progress
48"x60"
I'm not sure what this one is going to look like yet. I started blocking in shapes and colors last night and it looks a little too tropical to me right now. I will block in the mountains and pinon trees and play with the background a bit today and see what happens. This painting will be at the Weems Old Town show on May 7th.

Upcoming Weem Show

Work in progress
36"x36"
This is a large painting I'm working on for a Weems Old Town show that begins May 7th. The show features a sculptor and I knew I said I wasn't going to do any shows until Artfest, BUT they said it could be whatever I wanted, so I agreed. I am filling up the back wall because the scuptor's work sits on pedestals. These will be mostly large paintings with no lines. Florals and landscapes and sunsets. This is the first one piece for the show...

"CHURCH AT ALGODONES"

"CHURCH AT ALGODONES"
8"X10"
I went to a plein air paint out at Dixon apple Farms on Friday. Sad to say, I did not see one other painter anywhere out there. It was beautiful and I will be posting some photos later. I also went to the little village of Pena Blanca, then I went to Placitas and Algodones. I saw this quaint little church and knew I had to paint it. It's painted with Golden Open acrylics, which are slow drying - more like oils. Which is good for plein air because you get sun, heat, and wind, which dry your acrylic paints out in no time at all. Anyway, I had a wonderful solitary getaway and can't wait to do it again! If you are interested in this painting, it is available. It has to completely dry and I will be adding some glazing to the shadows.
Also, I have a new post on my weight loss blog:

What I've been working on....

A painting requested by my daughter...a dahlia she found in a print somewhere. No lines!

The beginnings of my painting for the Legacy Art event coming up on May 8th. This painting will be auctioned off for the Art Has Heart Foundation.
I have a busy day and will write more later!

I am continuing on - toning two large canvases. One for the first of my Weems poster painitngs. I have the idea in my head for that one and want to get it on canvas before I forget! The other is a painting for the upcoming Legacy Art event in May. It will be a larger rendition of "THE CANYON" - probably 30"x40". I will check in later and have a wonderful day!

"LAVENDER MEADOW" in progress

"LAVENDER MEADOW"
12"X9"
Here's some spring lavender - I love to paint these meadows with all of the leaves, vines, and interplay of colors. You can see that I have started the linework in the middle of the painting. This should be nice when finished.

"WILD TULIPS" work in progress

"WILD TULIPS"
10"X10"
Another bouquet painting that I'm working on. This is a wild jumbled mass of spring tulips. I know it doesn't look very "New Mexican", but it was quite fun to paint.
I still am not in full painting mode yet. I have started back exercising after my surgery, but still feel a little weak. I went back to Weight Watchers and have lost 33.6 pounds so far. I have my appetite back and am still figuring out what to eat after gall bladder surgery. It seems like I can eat anything but I know that bad fats and fried foods are not good for me. I have a million things on my art "to do" list. I am starting to paint big sunflowers for the upcoming Weems Art poster. I also have a large piece to paint for the upcoming Legacy Art event - Lou Diamond Phillips will be back this year, so it is sure to be a blast. In fact, I think I better start that today, the event is May 8th! Wow, time flies...AND it is spring out which just makes me want to do yardwork and sit outside and enjoy all of the blossoms. So many things, so little time.....have a great week!

"RAINSTORM ABOVE CORRALES" in progress

"RAINSTORM ABOVE CORRALES"
12"X9"
I love this cornfield. The painting is a work in progress - if you look closely, you can see where I've started the linework. The Sandia Mountains are experiencing a small thunderstorm. I like where this one is going!

"THE SUNS"

"THE SUNS"
8"X10"
My first daily painting in quite some time! Since sunflowers are my favorite, I decided to start with those. I hope you like them. I have several more paintings in the work for Artfest too. I will showcase those as I finish them one by one. If you are interested in any Artfest painting that comes up, email me as soon as possible. I will keep these paintings at home for one week and then they become "offocial" Artfest paintings for the Weems show in November. The purchase information for "THE SUNS" is below. "THE CANYON"
12"X6"
work in progress
Hi all - I am finally painting again. I'm slowly getting back to normal and I just had to go into the studio today. I painted five paintings! Some will be daily paintings, some will be for Artfest.
This particular painting is a view of a canyon wash with a stream running through it. I love the mingling of colors and the contrast of the oranges with the blues. I am getting in the mood to go plein air painting. It's finally spring here, but I bet the trees haven't blossomed out in the north yet. We are supposed to go out and paint in Dixon as soon as the apple trees blossom, that should be a blast.
I'm feeling a lot better these last few days. I go to the doctor on Friday and will probably be able to start exercising at my normal pace on Monday. For those of you watching my weight loss blog, I was not able to weigh in at WW last Saturday, so I have no idea how I did. I will let you know this weekend. Anyway, I'm glad to be back. in my studio and thanks for hanging out with me!

Hello everyone -
An update! I am finally better from my gall bladder surgery, five days into recovery. On day three, my blood pressure would not come down and I felt like I coulldn't catch my breath. This has gone away, thank goodness, and I am feeling better every day.
I drove my car today and am taking short walks.
I finished a small commission and hope to get back to daily painting this week.
Thanks for all of the caring and comments and thanks to those of you that sent e-cards. I love them!

Gall Bladder emergency

Hi everyone -
I just wanted to let you know that I had a bad gall bladder attack starting Sunday morning at 5am. Went to the emergency room at 1pm and found out that I had pancreatitus, which is an inflammation of the pancreas caused by the gall bladder problem. I was admitted into the hospital and the doctor had to get the pancreas inflammation under control before he could do any surgery. I finally had surgery today, which is Tuesday, and they actually let me go home tonight, which is also Tuesday! Amazing what they can do nowdays. I guess a gallstone passed, got stuck in the duct and the pancreas enzymes had nowhere to go, so...anyway, I have 4 tiny little 1/4 inch incisions and am feeling okay. I had three gallstones total. I just have to walk a lot so there's no chance of blood build up in my legs. And eat a low fat diet until my body adapts. Sorry about the details. I will be back to work as soon as possible. but I have drugs for the pain and you get ABSOLUTELY no sleep in the hospital, so I'm hoping I get some sleep tonight. Please bear with me if I have a commission for you, and I will get back to it as soon as possible. Love to you all.....Dee

Miss Evalina Kelley

Miss Evie
passed away in her sleep early this morning from complications of acute leukemia.
She was one of the funniest, nicest, strongest, and most positive people I have ever met in my life. I will find some way to make her memory live on. Miss Evie, I love you.....

"SAN ANTONIO" Placitas

"SAN ANTONIO", Placitas
8"x10"
Commission
SOLD
Wow, it has been a busy week. I have been going through a million or so papers, shredding, and getting ready to organize for taxes. I've been saying for a few years that I wanted to do this and finally, I'M DOING IT! Of course, my studio is kind of a disaster now because I brought all of my business paperwork in here to start my new files.
This is a commission of the San Antonio old mission church in Placitas, New Mexico. In the summer, it has the most beautiful roses blooming right in front of it.
Tonight is the Casa Esperanza annual fundraiser - my bookshelf will be auctioned off to support this wonderful organization. I will take my camera and try to get some video of the action.

"PATCHES OF BLUE"

"PATCHES OF BLUE"
6"X8"
Another painting using new GOLDEN OPEN acrylics. It's strange but they scan differently and the colors show up on screen with more vividness that I anticipated. The actual painting is a bit softer. I am really looking forward to going on a paint-out next month (there are some really good ones coming up) and trying them out.
Tomorrow night is the Casa Esperanza fundraising event. I will take my video camera and catch some of the action! Have a great weekend...

Unwanted Post

Hi everyone -
I just wanted to let you know that someone hacked into this blog and posted a message that should not be here. It was sent out to everyone on my email list.
The problem has been fixed (by my wonderful brother) and you should not receive any more posts like this.
Thanks and please let me know if you receive any other posts like this.

New acrylics

"IRIS"
8"X6"
I went to the art store yesterday and they had these new acrylic paints called GOLDEN OPEN ACRYLICS. They work just like oil paints and stay wet longer than regular acrylics, which is good for plein air painting and getting out of my comfort zone. I bought a limited palette; titanium white, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, and cadmium yellow primrose. And I painted these iris! I love them - how soft they are, how I had to use my imagination and really think about mixing the pigments to get the colors I wanted. I painted this painting last night and this morning it was just barely dry enough to put under the scanner for a few seconds. I am going back today to get a few more. I couldn't mix a purple or orange that I liked, so I will look for those. This painting is available for purchase, just email me.
Happy weekend!!

THREE NEW PAINTINGS!

"CLOUD DANCE"
8"X8"
I was aiming for an ethereal, other-worldly feel in this painting, because I wanted the cross to feel sacred and "not of this earth.". I remember when my mom passed away unexpectedly over 10 years ago. A few days afterwards, I was watching some sad music video on TV and they were showing majestic mountains with clouds that were being viewed from an airplane. I just wondered if my mom was up there in those clouds and how could she really be gone? That is how I feel about Miss Evie. I'm not ready for her to go. Purchase information is below:

"ALONG CANYON ROAD"

"ALONG CANYON ROAD"
10"X8"
SOLD
Such a warm painting - it's cold outside tonight and this painting makes me feel toasty. It is very Santa Fe, which always has colorful windows filled with outdoor displays of all kinds of flowers, but usually geraniums. It just makes me feel good.
Purchase information is below.
Also, I just found out that one of my dear friends, Miss Evie, has the kind of cancer that doesn't go away and they have told her she only has 2-6 weeks left. Doctors don't know everything, they're making an educated guess, but Miss Evie is 87, so I will be spending as much time as I can with her. She is one of the most positive, strong people I know, and I wish everyone would think of her over the next few days and send lots of love her way.

"ALONG CANYON ROAD" in progress

It's taken me a while to get back to painting...lots going on. But I am excited! I have four small works in progress and hope to finish this one tonight. It's a couple of lovely geranium pots in front of a Canyon Road window in Santa Fe. Stay tuned and thanks for being patient.

Watercolor

This may look a little different from my normal work - that's because it is! This is on a thick watercolor paper and it is watermedia with lines. It's for an upcoming fundraising event in May for Legacy Art and the Art Has Heart Foundation. This is the tenth anniversary and they are making a book to auction with the original paintings of 40 artists inside! This is my contribution. If you'd like to read about Legacy, please go to www.legacyartabq.org.
I will be back to painting tomorrow - I have two small commissions to finish and am working on some larger pieces. Happy weekend.

Saturday, March 06, 2010

My cousin Kay Byrd's work. It was so interesting, this painting is for an upcoming event for Casa Esperanza, and she brought it to my studio for varnishing. I left it sitting on the easel and when the sun hit it in the morning, the yellow glow showed through the back of the canvas,
highlighting the moon. You can't even hardly see the moon if you look at the painting on the wall. I just thought it looked awesome.
You'll probably notice that I haven't posted in a while, I've had some gall bladder issues and have been sidelined by that. I may have to have surgery but am not sure yet. I will be feeling fine and then have these attacks that are just so painful.
But I bought a couple of art magazines to get me motivated and inspired and they have worked. I will be in this weekend, finishing up two commissions and a piece for a new book to commemorate Legacy Art's 10th anniversary of their annual fundraising event. Stay tuned and if you'd like to read my weight loss blog, go to: www.dees100pound.blogspot.com.

"JEMEZ AZUL: a New Mexico cloud painting

"JEMEZ AZUL"
8"X10"
This idea for this painting came from a photo I took in Jemez and after I got the inital rough in completed, I put the photo away and just let the brush do the rest. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The clouds are nice but what I really like is the patch of turquoise near the horizon line. We actually have that color in our skies, depending on the moment. Purchase information is below:

"JEMEZ CHURCH" a quaint adobe church in Jemez, New Mexico

"JEMEZ CHURCH"

My finished painting of the little church in Jemez, New Mexico. I'm happy with the way it turned out. I like the variation in the adobe walls and the changing colors of the New Mexico sky.

Jemez Church work in progress

"JEMEZ CHURCH"

work in progress...
I am painting again! Yay! Jemez inspired me and I wanted to paint this sweet little church first. I had to omit the Los Ojos Bar from the photo, it sits right next door. I should be finished with this painting tonight. If you're interested in purchasing before it's posted, please email me. Enjoy your Monday - I think it's going to snow here. I can't wait for spring.

Day Trip to Jemez

Look at those clouds! Someting out of an O'Keefe painting! This was between Bernalillo and Jemez. It's so cool, it took only about 40 minutes to get there from my house. This photo will definitely be a painting. Actually, I took 125 photos that I'm getting developed tomorrow and they could ALL be paintings!

This was a beautiful blue jay, I think he's called a stellar jay. My husband spotted him up at Camp Shaver. He flew away and we went and sat quietly in the car and the came back, landed on this post and just sat there posing. That's pretty cool - because I want to do some "fat" bird paintings for Artfest and I think he will be the first one.

These is the beautiful red hills of Jemez. As you can see, there is still snow in some parts. This was on the little tiny road coming back from the Gillman tunnels. Remember, Tom? It was a little scarier this time!

This was a shot of some pretty magnificent rolling clouds against the red of the hills and some of the snow that hasn't melted yet.

This was as we came into Jemez. Not so many clouds, no snow, and not so dark. I can't wait to go back in about a month and a half when everything is turning green. I'm going to post more pics tomorrow. I have some old adobe houses, the river with snowbanks, and a few more. And maybe a painting! Happy weekend!

Casa bookshelf progress

The beginning; a take on Van Gogh's STARRY NIGHT
The shelf is toned in my red/burnt sienna wash and loosely sketched with paint.

One of the bookshelf sides; grids spaced periodically and surrounded by a multitude of flowers

The other side; grids surrounded by sunflowers. You can see on the inside of the shelf - a starry night and a village scene below. The individual shelves are black with a gold line. I wasn't really pleased with the varnish. They stopped making my old one and I've been scouting out new ones. This one is glossy and the finish seemed a little tacky. I may redo it with a new matte varnish that has no shine. Anyway, it's done, and Monday I'm back to daily painting and painting for Artfest and working on the Weems poster painting. Happy Valentine's Day!

work in progress...

Hi all!
This is just a quick photo to show you some progress on teh hope chest I am working on for Casa Esperanza's upcoming fundraiser. It is a take on Vincent Van Gogh's STARRY NIGHT painting. I'm not sure where it's going at all yet, but I am working on it all day today and will post more photos tonight.

I've been getting a lot of requests for hollyhocks, so here they are! I don't normally paint red ones, which is unusual, since that's what we had most of when I was growing up. But I liked these, especially against the nice creamy adobe background. Purchase information is below. Also, I should have painting #2 on my Artfest blog (www.artfest2010.blogspot.com) completed this evening, so keep watching.....
