and other things.... This is my daily art blog. I'm artist Dee Sanchez and I live and work in Alameda, New Mexico - the land of blue skies, red hills, and three unique cultures. What a beautiful place to paint! Join me on my daily painting quest, my plein air adventures, my video logs, my "getting ready for a show" preparations, my painting tips, and I may even throw in an opinion or two...I also document my struggles with getting healthy and my crazy family life
I've been thinking about this project for awhile now - how to display my little daily paintings so I'll be able to see them, but they will dry without getting in the way. I looked at Lowe's and Home Depot and found some moulding I liked. The only problem was that the shelves had to be "built," in other words, there were two different pieces of moulding that had to be attached to each other and then attached to the wall. So I talked my husband into helping me. We are great at putting things together - I'm the directions person and he is the tool person. We put them up today and my little paintings look so cute! The ends of the shelves still need to be sanded and painted, but all in all, it was a good day. The larger shelf on the far right we installed several years ago to hold larger camvases. There are two rows of that one. We also removed a ratty screen door from the French door and put it in the shed until we get a new one. I'm getting ready for the studio tour, so I have all of my canvases toned now and things are shaping up! Also a fantastic paint out this week...I mailed out over 200 brochures today to the upcoming Alameda Studio Tour that will be happening on October 8 and 9 from 10am - 5pm.
I am personally inviting you out to visit my home and studio, have some refreshments, and just hang out and hopefully enjoy my work! We are all getting so excited and amped up about Preview night too. If you are interested in coming to Preview night or the studio tour, you can go to www.alamedastudiotour.com and download a brochure and map. You will also be able to pick up brochures at the following locations starting October 1st:
Alameda Greenhouse
La Parada de Alameda
Jericho Nursery
Cravin' Cookies
Flying Star
There will also be a tent at the school on the corner of 4th Street and Alameda. Please come!
Other than that, I am organizing for Artfest. I already have a few large paintings done and am working on the smaller paintings now. Frames should be here starting next week and I am getting anxious to see them. This will be the first time I have framed large oil paintings. I am starting to clean up for the tour, putting things away, organizing my reference photos instead of just leaving them scattered everywhere. I may even mop the floor! I'm also getting ready for a paint out to Ghost Ranch - I'm always up for that.
So, my life is cranking along, as usual, I hope yours is going well too. Happy Fall!
I went to the grower's market in Corrales yesterday and I also drove around taking photos - one of which was this beautiful bed of cosmos - aren't they gorgeous?
These are little ristras of garlic, onions, and shallots. The girl behind the table was stringing a ristra of chamisa, which I had never seen. It was pretty! I think I got part of it in one of my other photos.
Oh the red chile - it was crazy red. There wasn't a lot but I sure wanted to bring some home.
The first pumpkins I've seen. They had these set up in a long vertical line and I thought they made a nice photo, with the lines, the black shadows and grey concrete.
A basket of chile, all colors!
Okay, so we had a paint out at the Casa Rodena Winery on Monday and I knew I didn't want to actually paint, but I wanted to go and shoot some photos for Future paintings. I did take some photos of the winery and saw about eight or nine fellow painters out there, but most of my photos were of other places, to be honest. It was fun - I could go out every day and spend all my time doing nothing but looking for unique and cool photo opportunities. The photo above is at Los Poblanos - a working farm, store, lavender fields, gardens, inn and cultural center right in the heart of the north valley. Such a cool view - the mountains in the background, masses of wild sunflowers on the far left, cosmos in the foreground, and lavender and vegetable rows in between.
This was a Mr. sheep with his flock out in a field on Rio Grande. He kept jumping up in the tree and biting off leaves. I think it was one of those elm trees that crop up everywhere, and he must've liked it because I could've taken a hundred photos of him doing this. Finally he got tired and meandered his flock back towards the house.
This is a little tiny vineyard on the east side of Rio Grande. I will be going back in a month or so because once the leaves turn golden and brown, I can get great shots with the mountains in the background. This guy was having a great time, you have no idea how slowly this tractor was moving, he was just weaving in between the rows and enjoying the day.
A cool little adobe house on Guadalupe Street. There are those native sunflowers again! This will definitely be a painting for Artfest.I love the color of those windows.
This is an older home on El Pueblo or Ranchitos. It was the color of the fake brick with the beauty of the morning glories that caught my eye. Aren't they beautiful? This almost looks like an old mobile home that has been added onto through the years - I passed right by it and swung back for a second look. I had to zoom in to get this shot. Think this would make a nice painting?
This is when I know fall is near - the pears are ripe from my pear tree. They look delicious, but we've never been able to eat them. They have a really gritty aftertaste that I think comes from the skin. But they look so nice against my adobe courtyard wall!
This is my old ranchhouse bench I found at the estate sale place and it seemed the perfect spot to display my pears. I think there will definitely be a pear painting at Artfest this year.
A nice trio
This is painting #1 for Weems Artfest. I have a created a new blog to showcase the paintings (and so I can keep track of them). I will post a link to the blog every time I finish a new one. So, to check out the blog, click HERE.
