pastoral

Still Lifes Rock

"PASTORAL"
9x12"
oil

My first still life of thee year.

I really had fun with this one!

Something about that turquoise vase contrasting
 the orange-yellow of the lilly.

Gonna keep it short.

More to come in a day or two.

Have a good weekend!

P.S. For some reason, my comments are not coming through.
Feel free to email me at dshadowtail@aol.com until
I get it fixed. Thanks!

feels good

"THE BEST BOUQUET
10x8"
oil

I finally feel like I'm back in the painting zone!
I started this piece one evening when
I really wasn't in the mood to paint - but thought I SHOULD.

It all really came together and got me
excited for all of the events and projects I have coming up.

This bouquet of flowers really reminds me of my
grandmothers' gardens growing up.
Wildly chaotic and I used big, bold brushstrokes.

My next project is painting in Jemez and I will have
more details on that later.

new 150 CHALLENGE paintings

Hi all,

Here are my two newest 150 CHALLENGE paintings.

It is nice to get back into the groove.
I have 50 paintings to complete, but for some reason,
it doesn't feel like a lot.

I'm not under a deadline and I can paint whatever and whenever I want.

Yesterday, I really felt like I had to paint a still life.
I don't know why - I was just drawn to painting flowers and vases.

I finished CORNER WINDOW, and I was really happy
with the sunlight playing through the window and around the flowers.

Then Jemez called to me.

Maybe because I am itching to take a little day trip there
but I'm waiting until I can see at least a little
green in the landscape.

I hope you enjoy these two and today,
the door is open for me to paint ANYTHING!

I have a new Challenge image for our group,
"LET'S PAINT NEW MEXICO!"
It's an old truck, so I may paint that.
Here is the image:

Here are my new Challenge paintings:

#52 "JEMEZ BACKROADS"

$150

#53  "CORNER WINDOW"

4 "SOFT"

"SOFT"
6x6"
oil on panel

I wish you could see this painting in person and see the texture.
It's so buttery and thick.

Every so often I have to paint a still life, usually a bouquet of flowers.
It's in my DNA, these flowers.

I think it's harder to paint with a knife because you can never be done -
you just keep buttering paint over paint!

The ARCHITECTURE SHOW at Sumner and Dene was great last night.
I sold several paintings and saw some friends I hadn't seen for a while.
The show runs for a month, so if you have time, go down and check it out.

"BRIGHT BEAUTIES"
6x6"
oil on hardboard
available at Farm and Table Restaurant

I am really in the mood to paint flowers.
I think it's because I want spring to be here NOW.
Then I think about the folks up north who are experiencing so much cold, snow, and ice
and I am happy that I live in New Mexico. I hope winter ends early for everyone....

This is a crazy still life - a pretty bunch of wildflowers in a blue vase.
I wanted to just let go and let the brush direct me.

Now, I think I'm ready for a landscape.

On another note, I am going to lunch with Tom's daughter today.
We haven't really had a chance to talk since her dad passed away and
guess where we're going? One of Tom's favorite Mexican food restaurants.
They have the best cheese enchiladas, fried potatoes, and sopaipillas.

I will take pictures so you can drool from afar!

On another note, I am gearing up for the Retro Challenge:
organizing, ordering supplies, designing the postcard, setting up show details, etc.

More on that soon.

Have a great winter day!

STARRY NIGHT

The gala in Corrales was so fun last night.
There was a beautiful huge clear tent to the stars with twinkly lights everywhere.
There was a guy playing guitar and singing exactly like James Taylor.
I saw a few old friends and met some new plein air painters.
It was nice because we all had something in common.
Even though most of us were painting alone, we
came together for the same reason - to paint beautiful Corrales.

My truck painting sold right away, I was so happy!

I missed the Quick Draw competition yesterday.
It was at the old church and I didn't really want to paint it,
mainly because the first one I did, I ended up scraping off.
But I later found out that you could paint anywhere near the church,
as long as you could hear the starting and stopping bell.
Darn, if I had known that, I would've gone.
Oh well, I will be there again next year....

"SUMMER BOUQUET" SOLD

"SUMMER BOUQUET"
8X8"
SOLD

A commission for Tracy - thank you!
Funny - I just noticed the dark spot at the lower right hand of the flowers -
I'm not sure I like that.
It's strange how you sometimes don't notice things until you see them
nice and bright (and large) on the computer.

NEWS

Today is May 1st and my SWEPT AWAY Challenge starts in only 8 days!
To follow this 145 day Challenge, click HERE.

I'm still waiting on 122 6x6" panels to arrive.
I ordered 145, they shipped me 17 and back-ordered the rest.
They should be here before the Challenge starts - I'm hoping.
If not, I have back-up!

I also wanted to let everyone know that the Corrales Studio Tour is this weekend.
If you're out and about, be sure to check it out.
It's a fantastic tour and I'll be out and about, visiting artists, myself.

Also, I have a painting in the upcoming exhibition "SEEDS - A COLLECTIVE VOICE"
"SEEDS" opens this Saturday from 4-8 at the Downtown Contemporary Gallery.
This is going to be a spectacular exhibit.
I will post more information on this one tonight.
