Can you tell I'm ready for spring?? I've pruned all my small fruit trees, just have a big old gnarly apple tree left. It's been so warm here during the day that I've wanted to start digging in the garden. But I have to be patient, because I'm sure we'll have at least one or two snows yet. I think my favorite thing about this painting is the sky - it reminds me of cotton candy.

Another in my series of hollyhocks and windows. I spent about 4 hours at the emergency room with my daughter today (she hurt her knee snowboarding). She's fine although she has crutches for a few days. Then I went out to eat and to my favorite bookstore, so I felt like I wasn't really that productive today. I was thinking no lines, now I'm thinking minimal lines. What do you think? It's not varnished and it doesn't have much highlights or shadows yet, so it looks a little dull right now.

I do love those rolling hills and the softness of it.

Today was fun! I left the house and drove the slow way through Bernalillo, then headed east to Placitas. I pulled into the Loop Road and there were about six cars but I didn't see anyone. I'd painted here before so I just drove slowly down the little dirt road. It winds all the way up to the mountains (which still had snow on them). I found a couple of places and parked. It was windy so I actually painted most of the time in my car. It was so peaceful and quiet. I loved it.

The river in Pilar is breathtaking. Pilar is the little village off on the left on the way to Taos. I had passed by it for years, not even knowing what was behind the little gas station, fruit stand, convenience store, etc. There are picnic grounds and it's just so quiet and peaceful.

I am working on a large painting now and should have pics tomorrow. One of my old friends emailed me with thorough list of subjects to paint - it really inspired me. I hope I can get through all of them!

Wow, I can't believe it's already Friday. Time is passing way too quickly.

Last night's painting, "Taos Autumn" has been sold. I enjoyed painting it so much that I may try another version for tonight's post. If anyone wants first dibs, email me. I have also wanted to start a large painting for the gallery but couldn't decide what I wanted to paint. Now I know: a large version of Taos Autumn. So I will be working on that today and will take pics of the process.

The 150 CHALLENGE is going well. I am enjoying it and have so many ideas I want to try. I have added dragonflies, lightening, and lilly ponds to my list. I don't know how "New Mexico" those are, but we'll find out! I am also trying to think of some cool ways to publicize what I'm doing so people will want to watch and come to the show to see them all in one huge grouping.

I'm also going on a paint-out this Monday to Bosque del Apache, a huge wildlife refuge about 1 hour or so south of here. I may not paint (I'm taking my supplies, tho), but I'm taking my camera and a picnic. I am trying to fit time in to just relax and enjoy life this year. Anyway, I just wanted to check in with everyone and say thanks for watching, commenting, and supporting my art. Have a happy day.

Today officially begins my year.

I meditated this morning and just got back from the gym (yes, me!).

I cleaned my studio yesterday and organized my supplies for the 150 CHALLENGE - which starts today, by the way. I have a countdown list, so I am starting tonight with painting #150.

I will also post a daily painting tonight.

It snowed yesterday but the sun just came out which makes me SO happy.

WHAT I FOUND WHILE CLEANING

My very first painting - a watercolor we raffled off at a homeschooling conference.

Good morning!

My hollyhock painting is sold. I may try another one just like it tonight. I also have someone asking for a painting that has water in it, that's an idea. I'm also getting the urge to paint sunflowers. It's kind of nice at the beginning of the year - to just think of all the possibilities ahead. I'm making a list for the 150 Challenge of everything I want to paint. If you have any ideas, send them to me. I am also going to start a 48"x60" big floral color field painting for my gallery. I want to incorporate lots of paint drips into the final piece. I will try to take some videos of that when I start working on it.

Here's my list so far:

Well, it's late but I finished it! I decided on a more intimate version of the photo below and brought the flowers a little closer to the viewer's eye. I think it makes for a nicer painting. You can almost see the red/burnt sienna ground I used underneath the adobe wall color. I also took down my Christmas tree, cleaned my closet, and picked up some fruit tree prunings. Tomorrow it's my studio clean up time and a little visiting! Enjoy!

Did everyone survive the new year?

I STILL have to sit down and write out my goals and predictions.

It was so warm here yesterday that we got our little fruit trees pruned - an apple, two nectarines, two cherries, a peach and an apricot. We found a humminhbird's nest in the apricot and put it back when we were done. Maybe the hummers will return to it this spring.

The photo above will be my daily painting for tonight. I took this up in Taos a few months ago.

I love how the orangey-red hollyhock is all by it's lonesome at the top.

The first painting of YEAR 3 of being a daily painter - it's exciting to me to begin again. So many subjects, so little time!

I love iris and when I was growing up, we lived right next door to my grandmother. She had them all; dutch iris, bearded, in every color you could imagine. I used to play in the iris beds and the smell was heavenly - one of the most beautiful smells you can imagine. My grandmother was always digging up irises to give to anyone who came to visit.

So, I hope you enjoy the start of a new year of painting - I can't believe it's here already....

NEW YEAR: NEW PLANS

When I was looking for a photo to post today, I came across this photo of the interior of a really nice hotel in Santa Fe. It seems fitting for today. Another year! A light of hope! New plans! New dreams! New ideas! New goals! A new chance to start over!
Well, let's start with new plans - I have set a big challenge for myself for my new show in June!
The show details are below.

My dreams for 2009 are to get in shape (this has many sub-goals), travel and spend more with my husband, have a big organic garden, begin a yoga practice, meditate every day, do more plein air painting trips, make some art videos, and help my two daughters to realize their dreams. I also want to meet more people who enjoy my art and just have more fun. Be spontaneous! I think the older we get, the more we forget how to just relax and enjoy being alive. I think all of my goals are realistic and very achievable.

Workwise: I have four commissions to paint and finish in the next two weeks - Dancers, Cosmos Field, Morning Glories, and the Taos Church.

NEW CHALLENGE - NEW SHOW

The paintings will range in size from 5x5 to 12x12. I will also paint a few larger sizes: 12x16, 16x20, and have one or two large paintings as well. All for $150 or less! A great time for you to beome a new collector, build up your current collection, or just come to the show to see if I met my challenge!

The show will culminate the first week in June at the Old Town gallery. There will be food, music, a painting giveaway, and more. I may start a new blog for your viewing just to keep track of my 150 paintings. Watch for that....

IT'S CHRISTMAS EVE!

Hello everyone!

This has been a hectic, but wonderful year - I've made lots of new friends and defnitely kept the old. I love you all.

This is my Christmas tree. The orange twinkle lights go into my kitchen. On the left, you can see the door to my studio and one of my easels.

Today, I am finishing up my shopping, cooking, wrapping, and the million other little things we do to get ready for the holidays so we can enjoy our family and friends and just spending time together. May you have a wonderful Christmas and many blessings next year.

MORNING SUNRISE

Good morning! This is the sight that greeted me at about 7am this morning when I let the pups out of my studio. It was actually pretty breathtaking, a photo doesn't do it justice.

This is the view of the mountain and sunrise outside my studio door.

My ornaments are finished, boxed up, and ready to ship! Now, if we can just get out to the post office - the roads are very icy this morning, so I hear on the news.

I'm working on two small paintings this morning for a friend, toning and sketching a large canvas, and sketching an 18"x24" folklorico dancer painting. I'm also making fudge to send to a friend in Utah. It's a good day to stay inside, build a fire, and just enjoy life...

This is an ornament I painted for an old friend - we went to middle school together. I always envied her because she had seen the Beatles in concert and she had a cool Southern accent!

You can't see in the photo but there are little red poppies all across the bottom and a line of lavender and yellow triangles all around the middle.

A sketch of an idea for the painting. The sketch is rough and doesn't show the depth and detail of what the flowers will look like. My collector already has a big 36"x36" floral, so this painting will be similar in color and tone, using a lot of the same flowers - just a variation to add more interest and so it doesn't look exactly like the original. The pot will be a dark copper with shades of gold and orange. It could be shorter and more plump to fit in more flowers. The sky will be mysterious and various shades of grey/blue. The mountains in the background are rust fading to black at the bottom. Below is where it's going:

This painting is from a photo I took in Taos this year. Of course, I embellished a little. The original was in bright daylight next to the highway. I added a mysterious moon and the farolitos. The highway became a nicelittle sidewalk.

As you can see, Bella has moved herself right in and captured half of Roy's territory. Notice how his feet are hanging off the edge of the bench. He's way too sweet to her. If he's laying on the bench, she will bark at him until he gets down and then she will hop up and try to take up the whole space. They are better than television!

Today, all of the antique stores, schools, etc., in my neighborhood are having Shop and Stroll and Holiday Bazaars so my cousin and I are going to check them out. Just to get in the spirit of the season and have fun. Probably no painting today!

I'm painting so many churches and all things "New Mexico" and I decided to sketch something a little different to challenge myself. I've had this photo sitting around for a couple of years and always thought, "I'll get around to this someday..." Now I may look at the sketch for a couple of years, I don't know! This is a table with fine wine, grapes and a fireplace in the background. I believe that's an angel sitting on the mantle, not sure from my picture though - it's a little blurred. So today I will be working on 15 ornaments, two medium size works, and about 8 small commissions. I also got my large canvas back yesterday that will be going in a big nicho over someone's fireplace. And next week is my birthday! I will be turning 54. So many things to do, so little time....enjoy your day!

Aah, so simple, yet so spiritual. This is the most beautiful church in New Mexico, in my book.
