I went to the art store yesterday and they had these new acrylic paints called GOLDEN OPEN ACRYLICS. They work just like oil paints and stay wet longer than regular acrylics, which is good for plein air painting and getting out of my comfort zone. I bought a limited palette; titanium white, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, and cadmium yellow primrose. And I painted these iris! I love them - how soft they are, how I had to use my imagination and really think about mixing the pigments to get the colors I wanted. I painted this painting last night and this morning it was just barely dry enough to put under the scanner for a few seconds. I am going back today to get a few more. I couldn't mix a purple or orange that I liked, so I will look for those. This painting is available for purchase, just email me.

I was aiming for an ethereal, other-worldly feel in this painting, because I wanted the cross to feel sacred and "not of this earth.". I remember when my mom passed away unexpectedly over 10 years ago. A few days afterwards, I was watching some sad music video on TV and they were showing majestic mountains with clouds that were being viewed from an airplane. I just wondered if my mom was up there in those clouds and how could she really be gone? That is how I feel about Miss Evie. I'm not ready for her to go. Purchase information is below:

Such a warm painting - it's cold outside tonight and this painting makes me feel toasty. It is very Santa Fe, which always has colorful windows filled with outdoor displays of all kinds of flowers, but usually geraniums. It just makes me feel good.

Also, I just found out that one of my dear friends, Miss Evie, has the kind of cancer that doesn't go away and they have told her she only has 2-6 weeks left. Doctors don't know everything, they're making an educated guess, but Miss Evie is 87, so I will be spending as much time as I can with her. She is one of the most positive, strong people I know, and I wish everyone would think of her over the next few days and send lots of love her way.

It's taken me a while to get back to painting...lots going on. But I am excited! I have four small works in progress and hope to finish this one tonight. It's a couple of lovely geranium pots in front of a Canyon Road window in Santa Fe. Stay tuned and thanks for being patient.

Watercolor

This may look a little different from my normal work - that's because it is! This is on a thick watercolor paper and it is watermedia with lines. It's for an upcoming fundraising event in May for Legacy Art and the Art Has Heart Foundation. This is the tenth anniversary and they are making a book to auction with the original paintings of 40 artists inside! This is my contribution. My cousin Kay Byrd's work. It was so interesting, this painting is for an upcoming event for Casa Esperanza, and she brought it to my studio for varnishing. I left it sitting on the easel and when the sun hit it in the morning, the yellow glow showed through the back of the canvas,

highlighting the moon. You can't even hardly see the moon if you look at the painting on the wall. I just thought it looked awesome.

You'll probably notice that I haven't posted in a while, I've had some gall bladder issues and have been sidelined by that. I may have to have surgery but am not sure yet. I will be feeling fine and then have these attacks that are just so painful.

But I bought a couple of art magazines to get me motivated and inspired and they have worked. I will be in this weekend, finishing up two commissions and a piece for a new book to commemorate Legacy Art's 10th anniversary of their annual fundraising event. This idea for this painting came from a photo I took in Jemez and after I got the inital rough in completed, I put the photo away and just let the brush do the rest. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The clouds are nice but what I really like is the patch of turquoise near the horizon line. We actually have that color in our skies, depending on the moment. Purchase information is below:

I am painting again! Yay! Jemez inspired me and I wanted to paint this sweet little church first. I had to omit the Los Ojos Bar from the photo, it sits right next door. Day Trip to Jemez

Look at those clouds! Someting out of an O'Keefe painting! This was between Bernalillo and Jemez. It's so cool, it took only about 40 minutes to get there from my house. This photo will definitely be a painting. Actually, I took 125 photos that I'm getting developed tomorrow and they could ALL be paintings!

This was a beautiful blue jay, I think he's called a stellar jay. My husband spotted him up at Camp Shaver. He flew away and we went and sat quietly in the car and the came back, landed on this post and just sat there posing. That's pretty cool - because I want to do some "fat" bird paintings for Artfest and I think he will be the first one.

These is the beautiful red hills of Jemez. As you can see, there is still snow in some parts. This was on the little tiny road coming back from the Gillman tunnels. Remember, Tom? It was a little scarier this time!


This was a shot of some pretty magnificent rolling clouds against the red of the hills and some of the snow that hasn't melted yet.

This was as we came into Jemez. Not so many clouds, no snow, and not so dark. I can't wait to go back in about a month and a half when everything is turning green. I'm going to post more pics tomorrow. I have some old adobe houses, the river with snowbanks, and a few more. And maybe a painting! Happy weekend!

I have not posted in a few days because I have been down sick with something that is severe and intestinal. I am feeling a little better now and hope to post artwork tomorrow. Thanks and keep watching.....

Casa bookshelf progress

The beginning; a take on Van Gogh's STARRY NIGHT

The shelf is toned in my red/burnt sienna wash and loosely sketched with paint.

One of the bookshelf sides; grids spaced periodically and surrounded by a multitude of flowers

The other side; grids surrounded by sunflowers. You can see on the inside of the shelf - a starry night and a village scene below. The individual shelves are black with a gold line. I wasn't really pleased with the varnish. They stopped making my old one and I've been scouting out new ones. This one is glossy and the finish seemed a little tacky. I may redo it with a new matte varnish that has no shine. Anyway, it's done, and Monday I'm back to daily painting and painting for Artfest and working on the Weems poster painting. Happy Valentine's Day!

Wow, it has been one crazy week! I don't know where the time is gone. Well I do, I guess.

Monday I took a dear friend for a mammogram and went to the gym. Tuesday my cousin's car broke, so took her to work, went to work out, picked her up, and the day was pretty much over. Wednesday, my dear friend had to go back for another mammogram (they thought they found something). She is 87 and was a little worried. She came out with the biggest smile on her face and it was nothing. My cousin's car still wasn't working, so I happily played taxi and the next day I gad to take her for a couple of serious tests at the hospital. Went to work out, picked her up (everything was okay), then my car decided that it's water pump was broken, so I'm dealing with that right now. It has been CRAZY! My husband has been sick with a bad cold, and right now I am cooking beans becuase I am going to work at Project Share tonight - a nice place that makes meals for people who need them.

Anyway, this is a work in progress for the first painting for Artfest. I will start posting on February 1st. I am excited about that. Also, I am doing a show at Weems Old Town in May, just a small one, but they asked and said no stress, just give us what you have, so I will create something cool for them. My next daily painting. I love Taos. And I love cows. These cows were crossing pastureland near the Taos Pueblo. It was a beautiful fall day and I couldn't imagine anywhere else a cow might want to be. The mountains were beautiful and there were a bunch of big puffy clouds in the sky. Wow, I have a feeling I will be working in the studio all day today - there's snow outside! It's beautiful and it's not really cold, my dog's water wasn't even frozen. They are. however, begging to come back in the warm studio.

This painting is a bit of a departure - it has a dark night sky, a mountain ridge, and lots of beautiful flowers in the canyon below. I should finish it tonight. Enjoy your Saturday!

This little painting is two senoritas on their way to a little church. I am not yet happy with the church itself and will be doing some revisions today. I think these two ladies are engaged in conversation, maybe they are talking about what they will have for lunch after the service is over. Hello everyone!

1. I thought I better check in and let you know what's been going on with me. I know you haven't seen many posts and that's because I've been working on finishing up a few small commissions. Those will be finished this week and then I have a couple of larger paintings I'm also working on. Plus, I have a beautiful southwestern bookshelf that I'm painting for Casa Esperanza, the home-away-from-home for cancer patients receiving treatments at UNM Hospital. Their event is coming up soon and I have a few ideas floating around but nothing concrete yet. Don't worry Maryle!

2. Daily paintings are starting up again! I just bought a lot of new small canvases and am ready to roll, so start watching....

3. I have been enjoying my time a lot. I am not doing any big shows until November when I will be the poster/print artist for Weems Artfest 2010. That is so exciting, I can't wait! I may put a few paintings in a June show at Weems Old Town and I'd like to do some painting on location there also. I have joined Weight Watchers and have lost 15 pounds so far. I am exercising too, which is hard because of my lack of knee cartilage but they hurt worse if I don't move them. I have gotten massages too, I am meditating, reading, and enjoying my family.

4. I am going on a paint out to Placitas next Monday. It may be too cold for me to actually paint, but I will be able to take a lot of great photos and it's so peaceful there - just to take a ride there is really nice. I see a lot of art events that I would like to participate in, but I have to keep reminding myself that this is the year for "me" and I need to take care of myself.

5. I have a new camcorder! I am learning how to use it. Soon I will be making videos of all kinds and posting them on youtube. I especially want to get some video when I go out on painting locations. And I want to record my painting techniques and the process of creating a big show event.

6. Now, to the big news: I HAVE CREATED A NEW BLOG FOR ARTFEST 2010!

This will be to showcase my paintings for the show and also to record the process of creating the painting that will become the poster for Artfest. I have to create at least five larger paintings and they will choose the poster from those. I have a lot more wall space at this year's show so I am going to start early. I will post these paintings starting at #1 and work my way forward.

I am in the process of cleaning up my studio and came across this little oil - I think it was the first time I had ever tried oils in my studio. My daughter loved it and hung it in her room for a long time. Then it got moved to the bathroom! Then all of a sudden, it appeared in my studio one day. It's on hold for a friend, but I thought you might like to see it. I will post photos when I get the studio cleaned up!

This rough sketch is already a completed painting - it's drying now and will be delivered today. As it is a surprise for someone, I won't post the finshed painting until tonight or tomorrow.

Today I am headed to Weight Watchers to weigh in, then it's off to lunch with my friend Evie. We love this place called Taco Sal and go there about once a month. The BEST sopapillas! Well, one of the best.

When I come back, I am having my husband move in a southwestern bookshelf from the garage that I will be painting for Casa Esperanza. I also have three small 8x10 commmissions, a 20x20 Rio Grande Gorge, a 24x24 black and white dahlia painting for my daughter, and a 24x30 Taos Gorge with sunflowers. Enjoy your weekend!
